Here’s the fact that settles most forum arguments: there is no voltage difference between these three platforms. DeWalt’s own fine print says it plainly — maximum initial battery voltage, measured without a workload, is 20 volts; nominal voltage is 18. Milwaukee’s M18™ packs are sold as 18-volt lithium-ion. Ryobi’s ONE+™ system is 18 volts by name.
All three feed the horn’s compressor the same nominal 18 volts, so the motor spins at the same speed, the tank fills in the same time, and the trumpets hit the same advertised decibel number. A “20V” badge on the pack does not buy you a louder honk.

Capacity and Runtime: Amp-Hours Are the Real Variable
Since voltage is a wash, the battery spec that actually matters is capacity. BossHorn rates its horns for packs from 2.0Ah up to 12.0Ah on each platform, and quotes the same runtime on all of them: 500+ short blasts or roughly 200 sustained two-second blasts on a 6Ah battery.
Capacity scales runtime, not loudness. A 12Ah pack gives you roughly double the blasts of a 6Ah pack; it does not add a single decibel. Only two wrinkles break the symmetry: the 5-trumpet model isn’t currently listed in a Ryobi-compatible version, and the flagship Boss Series runs $20 cheaper in its Milwaukee-compatible version than the DeWalt- and Ryobi-compatible ones. Everything else is identical money for identical hardware.

- You already own packs on one platform — buy that version. Done. This covers most buyers.
- You own packs on two of the three — pick whichever platform has your highest-capacity pack, since Ah is the only spec that changes runtime.
- You own no packs — price a battery and charger into the total on each platform before comparing, and note the Ryobi-compatible line currently skips the 5-trumpet tier.
- It’s a gift — find out what cordless tools the recipient owns before ordering. The dock is platform-specific; an M18™ horn will not accept a 20V MAX™ pack.

What a Battery Horn Gives Up vs an Installed Air System
A platform-locked shopper should still know what this category is and isn’t. A battery train horn is a self-contained, grab-and-go device: no drilling, no air lines, no wiring, and you can carry it to a tailgate or a boat.
