Nathan K3LA vs K5LA is the classic fork in the road for anyone shopping a genuine AirChime locomotive horn: same maker, same kettle-drum bell platform, but a three-note chord versus the famous five-note B major 6th — and a surprisingly different bill by the time either one actually makes noise on your truck.

Same family, two different voices

Both horns come from Nathan AirChime, the manufacturer whose horns dominate North American railroading. AirChime’s founder, Robert Swanson, started out casting custom steam whistles at his home in British Columbia, and his dislike of thin-sounding single-note air horns is the whole reason chord-tuned locomotive horns exist at all. The K-series model code tells you most of what you need to know:

  • K — kettle-drum, double-diaphragm bell design
  • 3 / 5 — the number of chimes (tuned bells sharing one manifold)

So the K3LA is a three-bell, low-mount horn with American tuning, and the K5LA is the five-bell version of the same idea. Neither one is a replica or an aftermarket imitation — these are the actual horns bolted to working locomotives, built to satisfy the federal horn rule, which requires a lead locomotive’s horn to produce between 96 and 110 dB(A) measured 100 feet ahead of the locomotive.

That shared DNA matters when you’re comparing them. The bell construction, diaphragms, and 1/2-inch NPT air inlet carry across both models. What actually changes is the chord, the footprint, and the price.

The chord: three notes vs five

The K3LA’s three notes are a straight subset of the K5LA’s chord — the same bottom D♯ (about 311 Hz) and F♯ (about 370 Hz), plus the B on top. What it gives up are the two notes that define the K5LA’s personality: the G♯ that turns a plain major chord into a major 6th, and the doubled D♯ an octave up that gives the big horn its shimmer and long-distance projection.

That interval structure is why the two are instantly distinguishable side by side. The K3LA reads as a clean, consonant major chord — bright, correct, unmistakably a train. One warning for used-market shoppers: the older K3L and K3H play a D♯ minor set (D♯/F♯/A♯), not the American B major triad. A listing photographed from six feet away can hide that entirely — the casting looks nearly identical.

Built for Amtrak: how each horn got its job

The five-chime story starts with the K5H, which debuted in 1954 playing a D♯ minor chord — a somber, slightly eerie voicing driven by Canadian regulations of the era. In 1975, Amtrak’s Deane Ellsworth wanted the superior K5 platform for American passenger service but with a friendlier sound, so the pitch of specific bells was lowered, transforming the chord from D♯ minor 6th to B major 6th. The result was the K5LA, and by the late 1980s it had become North America’s most popular locomotive horn — the standard for Amtrak, CSX, Norfolk Southern, and Illinois Central, per Wikipedia’s Nathan Manufacturing entry.

The K3LA carved out a different niche. With three bells on a compact manifold, it became the go-to horn for commuter and transit equipment — it’s most commonly found on Metra’s gallery cab cars in Chicago — plus short-line power and smaller platforms where a five-bell manifold is overkill. Same pedigree, same American tuning, smaller job.

Size and weight: what actually fits your vehicle

Width is the number that kills most K5LA install plans. At 29.75 inches across the manifold, the five-chime is nearly twice as wide as the K3LA, and under a pickup bed that’s the difference between a clean bolt-in and relocating your spare tire. The 6 lb weight gap matters less than it sounds — either horn needs frame-grade mounting, not a bumper bracket — but the K3LA’s narrower, slightly lower package simply fits places the K5LA never will.

2026 prices: the small horn isn’t automatically the cheap one

Here’s the twist most buyers don’t expect. As of August 2026, HornBlasters sells the reconditioned K3 — pulled from retired locomotives, sandblasted, powder-coated, and rebuilt with new internal components — for $1,949.99 standalone. Locomotive Parts Supply lists a rebuilt K5LA, bead-blasted with new hardware and internals, for $1,699.95. When LPS actually has stock, the five-chime is the cheaper horn; the catch is that those rebuilds sell out regularly, while the K3 tends to stay available.

Feeding them air

Both horns drink from the same well: a 1/2-inch NPT inlet and the K-series operating window that Locomotive Parts Supply lists as 90–140 PSI for the K5LA.
